For Mac and Tyler, falling in love started with a DM. After Tyler’s TikTok work for a major brand went viral, Mac tracked down his Instagram because, as Tyler put it, “he thought he was cute.” What started as occasional messages in 2020 turned into daily voice notes, long conversations, and eventually a first visit from Kentucky to San Diego in 2021. Before that weekend was even over, Tyler asked Mac in an In-N-Out drive-thru if he’d ever consider moving to California. Two months later, they packed up Mac’s car and drove cross-country together.
That same sense of spontaneity and trust shaped their queer San Diego wedding. Inspired by vintage Vegas, Palm Springs design, disco culture, and western fashion, the couple created a rooftop celebration supplemented with custom Nudie suits, colorful guest fashion, drag performances, disco balls, and views of the San Diego harbor at sunset. More than anything, they wanted the day to feel like “a party full of colorful, queer love.”

Mixing Vintage Vegas Style With Disco Cowboy Energy
Mac and Tyler knew early on that they didn’t want their wedding to follow a traditional formula. As two men who grew up in middle America, they felt drawn to the boldness and freedom of places like Palm Springs and Las Vegas. Those influences shaped nearly every creative decision they made for their queer San Diego wedding.
Tyler, who works in creative social media, approached the wedding almost like a large-scale creative project. The couple built Pinterest mood boards, sourced vintage-inspired pieces from thrift stores and online boutiques, and designed everything from the invitations to the wedding website around their “vintage disco cowboy” vision. Even their bachelor party in Vegas reflected the aesthetic, complete with vintage-style hotel keys and visors for guests.
They also encouraged guests to fully embrace the colorful dress code. Instead of asking people to blend in, they wanted everyone to become part of the visual experience. According to Tyler, guests absolutely “understood the assignment.”

Bringing Vintage Western Fashion to Personalize Their Queer San Diego Wedding Day
Fashion became one of the most memorable parts of the wedding. Instead of classic tuxedos, Mac and Tyler designed custom embroidered Nudie suits inspired by vintage western wear. Working with an overseas manufacturer allowed them to create highly personalized looks while staying within budget.
The suits featured embroidery tied to their personalities and relationship, while matching cowboy boots and bolo ties with photos of their dogs added even more personal details. Their rings were also custom-designed by LGBTQ+-owned San Diego jeweler Chouette Designs to match the Palm Springs-meets-Vegas aesthetic they envisioned.
The process wasn’t completely stress-free. Tyler later admitted that working with an overseas custom suit maker created unexpected anxiety when the final fit didn’t fully match what they had imagined.
For couples considering custom wedding fashion, their experience is a good reminder to leave extra time for alterations and shipping delays, especially when working internationally. Still, Tyler says the emotional experience of the day mattered far more in the end than perfect tailoring.

Prioritizing Inclusivity While Choosing Wedding Vendors
One of the couple’s biggest priorities while planning their queer San Diego wedding was building a vendor team that genuinely supported LGBTQ+ couples and inclusive celebrations.
While their planner helped connect them with several vendors, Mac and Tyler were especially intentional when choosing photographers, DJs, and entertainment. They paid close attention to whether vendors actively featured diverse couples in their work and marketing.
“We really wanted to feel surrounded by love on our big day,” Tyler shared. “We always asked vendors to politely decline if they felt they would be uncomfortable in that kind of space.”
That sense of comfort and support can be felt throughout the entire celebration. Instead of worrying about whether guests or vendors would fully understand their vision, they were able to focus on creating an experience that felt honest to them.

Creating Meaningful Moments With Family and Chosen Community
The ceremony took place at sunset in a modern amphitheater overlooking the San Diego harbor. Guests entered in small groups and couples while “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves played in the background.
For Tyler, one of the most emotional parts of the ceremony was feeling the overwhelming support from everyone gathered there. “I felt like I could physically feel the warm hug of love in the room,” he shared.
The ceremony also carried deep personal meaning for both families. Mac danced with his mother during the reception, a moment that felt especially emotional considering he had still been closeted when the couple first met. Tyler, who lost his mother to ALS just months before the wedding, shared his first dance with his sister while “II Most Wanted” by Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus played.

Choosing a Rooftop Venue With Space for an All-Night Party
Finding the right venue was one of the biggest turning points. The couple wanted a space that reflected San Diego itself, especially since most of their guests were traveling from across the country. They ultimately chose a rooftop venue with panoramic harbor views, indoor-outdoor flexibility, and fewer restrictions than many traditional venues in the area.
One detail that immediately sold them was the giant digital billboard in the building lobby that they could customize as a welcome display for guests. Tyler designed a large-scale welcome graphic that greeted everyone as they arrived.
The venue also allowed them to keep music going until midnight, something that was difficult to find due to local noise restrictions. Combined with arcade games, rooftop terraces, disco balls, and handmade silver fringe installations hanging above the dance floor, the space captured exactly the high-energy atmosphere they wanted.

Surprising Guests With Unexpected Reception Entertainment
If the ceremony brought everyone to tears, the reception brought the chaos in the best possible way. The biggest surprise of the night came when the DJ announced that “Cher” had arrived. Moments later, drag performer Chad Michaels appeared and performed a full Cher megamix that completely transformed the energy of the room. According to the couple, some older relatives genuinely believed they had hired the real Cher.
Afterward, legendary drag performer Dolly Levi kept the momentum going with high-energy performances that packed the dance floor all night long. Videos from the performances later went viral on TikTok, earning more than 3 million views.

Why the Most Meaningful Details Had Nothing to Do With Tradition
What stands out most about their wedding isn’t just the visual details or performances. It’s the feeling that every part of the day reflected the life they had built together: creative, unconventional, emotional, and deeply supported by the people around them. Even during a stressful week leading up to the wedding, Tyler says being surrounded by that much love helped carry him through.
For Mac and Tyler, their queer San Diego wedding wasn’t about recreating tradition. It was about creating a space where everyone they loved could fully celebrate alongside them exactly as they were.
