Megan and Sean’s lush, tropical wedding on the incredible island of Kauai might seem like a destination, but the happy couple was lucky enough to call Hawaii home for years before recently moving to Seattle. They were thrilled to be able to share favorite Hawaiian traditions with their guests throughout the weekend long celebration that included a welcome cocktail party, champagne bridal luncheon, and a sunset rehearsal dinner before their elegant white wedding. Beautifully captured by the talented Derek Wong, their photos reveal Megan’s impeccable style, loads of elegant white orchids, and meaningful moments!
The Goals: From Bride Megan – We really wanted to be surrounded by family and friends in a place that is so special and meaningful to us – gorgeous Kauai! We had both lived in Hawaii for several years, so wanted an oceanfront traditional Hawaiian ceremony. It was very emotional, spiritual, and unique. Many guests commented afterwards that our ceremony made them want to get married again. Such a thoughtful compliment! Our wedding really was intimate, timeless, and completely magical.
The Design: I envisioned a white wedding with lots of texture, which became a recurring theme in my dress, our cake, the reception china, our flowers etc. I also wanted a touch of color though, so was inspired by peacock feathers and the ocean and landscape of Kauai to incorporate teal and chartreuse. After that, we just wanted a look that was easy, beach-side elegance!
The Look: I have to say I really loved my dress! It was soft and feminine, with classically elegant details inspired by Grace Kelly. Both my dress and my necklace were by the amazing Amy Kuschel. They made me feel beautiful – exactly what I wanted on my wedding day! I carried a bouquet of white phaleonopsis orchids that were tropical and elegant. My maid of honor, my sister, had a look that was very beach chic. She wore a raw silk teal cocktail dresses with sparkling gladiator flats, a peacock feather in hair and carried chartreuse orchid floral arrangement. We had our flower attendants pass out an orchid to all of the female guests to tuck behind their ear, which is a Hawaiian wedding tradition that makes everyone feel special!
The Moments: Walking down the hillside to our oceanfront wedding ceremony site with not only all of our friends and family looking on – but also the many guests of the resort! – was so wonderful and overwhelming at the same time. Also, we chose to stand in a circle of white orchids to unite us as one during our ceremony, with our guests seated in a wide semi-circle around us. It was so special to look out and see everyone that means the most to us, so close by. It created a perfectly intimate setting. And during our ceremony, our officiant offered a Hawaiian blessing and had us stand with our foreheads touching each other and our eyes closed as he walked around us and offered blessings to the land and the place. I will truly never forget that feeling.
I also had some incredible moments with my family…getting ready in my suite with my sister, mom and mother-in-law throughout the day was totally relaxing and we all felt pampered. Also, walking down the aisle with my dad, he had some really loving things to say and of course, I got emotional. Such a special memory!
