What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Keene and I usually gravitate toward classic, vintage, old-world style. Not adjectives that are generally used to describe the new and modern, Future of Flight Museum. However, the museum has always been an important place for the Smith family, since my dad, Barry Smith, was a major part of its creation in 2005. Seeing the museum materialize was the realization of many dreams for my dad. It is also located in Mukilteo, where I grew up, and is a big part of Boeing and the Northwest.

When we were sitting around as a family just throwing out wild wedding ideas one day, the notion of an airplane departure directly from the museums gallery door was mentioned…and that started to sound downright vintage and old world! And my dad, an aviation fanatic and romantic at heart, of course loved the idea of a fairytale getaway. One Lockheed Model 10 Electra owner and two pilots later, we had our magical ending.

I think that our aesthetic for classic details blended with the modern museum and created a twinkling, bright evening that reflected us, where we came from, and our family. I worked very hard to make meaningful choices (a family friend hand made my veil, I tied the trim from my mothers veil around my bouquet, carried my grandmothers vintage beaded handbag, and was delighted to borrow a necklace that was worn by Keenes aunt and his great grandmother on their wedding days). Since I am a graphic designer I also designed many of the details myself (campaign buttons that matched our Support Smith/OConnor save the dates, glittering table assignment hearts in my favorite pinks and golds, invitations and programs with our heart/shamrock pattern). When I peeked down at the venue from where us girls were getting ready that morning, I grinned ear-to-ear when I saw all these ideas coming together in one space.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding?

I am still so glad that I chose to have my sister as my only bridesmaid and maid of honor. She is the most important of many dear women in my life and I loved having her by my side! I was also so grateful for my golden friend Shannon (we first became acquainted at 1 years old in baby class), who showed up at our house that morning and jumped into action taking care of all the little details.

Looking back I am very glad that we designed most of the ceremony ourselves and wrote part of our own vows. I was concentrating so hard to say my vows clearly in that moment, that it was nice to know deep down that I understood exactly what I was stating – because I wrote it! We also chose two of our very close family friends and mentors, Marla and Jean, to officiate for us. When we were standing up there with them, we were confident that they knew us and our relationship, and that we were in good hands.

Most of my friends know Im a die-hard Cher fan, so when we picked I Got You Babe for our first dance song, it was funny when the DJ cued it up and a little wave of laughs bounced around the gallery. But as we were dancing I really started to feel the love of everyone in that room, and the love I feel for Keene, and it was like we were having this tiny beautiful moment together, dancing to a goofy Sonny & Cher song. Now I love that song even more!

And of course, it was unforgettable when it was our turn for a little tradition that our group of friends started when the first of us all got married – the group serenaded us with the amazingly cheesy and delightfully grandiose Bryan Adams – Everything I Do, complete with air guitar solos. It was fabulous.

The evening of our wedding was miraculously clear out for May 5th in the Northwest, and the Supermoon came out to shine down on us! It was truly magical flying away from our wedding with the bright moon in the background. It was unreal!

What specifically drew you to this photographer and their imagery? Ever since we saw images from a friend’s wedding that Jenny had shot we were fans of her work. I especially love that the couples that she photographs really look like themselves. I think she does a magnificent job of capturing peoples faces and expressions. When we met with Jenny, her philosophies about shooting completely aligned with our desires, as we really hoped for images that would capture the energy and mood of the day and document our friends and family as we see them. I think she did a fantastic job! After our wedding, our family and guests kept raving over and over again about how those photographers were so fun!, even saying that they felt immediately like Jenny and her team were people they wish they could hang out with.”. Yep, thats how we felt as well!
