The Wedding: 9.10.11 – Cathedral Park, Portland, OR
From the bride, on style inspirations and incorporating their personalities into the big day: Our focus throughout our planning process was making the wedding a reflection of us – our style, what we enjoy in our lives and city, and how much we care about our friends, families, and each other. Our vision was a big, fun party. We wanted to share a delicious meal spotlighting local, seasonal food with our guests, have lots of great music and dancing, and provide our guests with a few surprises throughout the evening. The feel was semi-formal with a cohesive design throughout, but comfortable. We encouraged guest interaction through long, narrow dining tables, a thoughtful seating chart, and a floor-plan layout that lent itself to mingling.
Some ways we incorporated our style and personalities: We chose five colors that reflected and tied together the ceremony and reception venues. Our friends JJ and Alan of Muscle+Bone designed our invitations with a lovely bird theme, illustrating Vauxs swifts flying over the St. Johns bridge and into the Chapman School chimney. We extended this theme and the colors and fonts of the invitations throughout the wedding, making programs, menu cards, jam labels, signage, a seating chart, table markers, etc. that coordinated without feeling too formal. Our good friend, Jonny Romero, made a wooden screen for the reception from spare plywood from the remodel of Chris office. He custom-painted the St. Johns Bridge (under which we held the ceremony) on one side and the tree of life on the other. It was a beautiful, color-coordinated addition that defined the western end of the reception space. We also utilized a metal bay door in The Plant for an interactive guest book, putting out paper bird cutouts in our wedding colors for guests to write on and hang on the door with tiny magnets. By the end of the night, the wall of colorful birds was a very pretty visual addition to the space.
From the bride and groom, on their most loved moments, decisions and memories from the wedding: Getting to experience this series of events, which felt huge to us, after all the brainstorming, envisioning, and months of hard work. We had a blast!
Chris: Watching Kate come down the stairs and aisle at the ceremony and dancing a very festive last dance of the evening together. And a special romantic dinner our nieces set up for the two of us that included cake, soda (wine), and popcorn.
Kate: Getting to the top of the stairs at the ceremony and seeing Chris and all our family and friends gathered to offer their love and support of us and our marriage. And all the dancing!
We had a last-minute switch-up in the ceremony when our ring bearer decided he didnt want to bear the rings (Chris 2.5-year-old nephew, Nate). One of the two flower girls (Chris nieces) stepped in, and Nate became a flower boy – a very enthusiastic one. He did a full-on overhead throw of his leaves at the end of the aisle. It was priceless. We had a series of wonderful, very touching toasts at our reception. The last one was a song by our friend, Tom. As he played his guitar and sang, the children at the reception all spontaneously hit the dance floor next to him and danced along. It was magical to us. The involvement of our family and friends was awesome – we loved having their personalities add to the events.
From the bride, on what drew her to Aaron Courter’s imagery: Aaron photographed our friends’ wedding in August 2010, and their photos were excellent–there’s a great mix of playful, poignant, and atmospheric qualities to them. He had also taken a dynamic photo of us dancing at their reception that we loved. Not wanting to skip our research, we looked at several Portland photographers, but Aaron’s portfolio showed every kind of shot we wanted of our wedding – intimate candids, atmospheric long-shots, posed group shots, and detail spotlights, all equally well-photographed. We couldnt be happier with our decision to work with Aaron; we have been delighted with his photographs, professionalism, and dedication to getting wonderful photographs.
