Sweetly Colorful Scottish Wedding at Gilmerton House

Rachel and Andy wanted to have their wedding somewhere they could spend an entire weekend celebrating with family and friends. Gilmerton House gave them that and more – it had all the space they needed in addition to the room for a marquee and the ability to get married in the woodland outdoors. Luckily, the weather cooperated, and photographers Chris and Gill of The Curries got some fantastic shots of the couple in the fields. Eileen from Sugar8 created a beautiful video of Rachel and Andy’s big day, and it looked like all of their guests had a grand old time celebrating together!

I spent forever looking at dresses, and really struggled to find something that felt like “the one”. In the end Rachel, at Rachel Scott Couture, introduced me to the “Jessica” Sassi Holford Dress. The dress was originally strapless so Sassi added some lace straps and lowered the back for me. I added a simple cut edge tulle veil and some flowers in my hair along with a handmade pearl bracelet from Rachel Scott and some metallic Jimmy Choos.

We wanted a Church of Scotland ceremony, so kept our vows traditional. Andy’s sister read “On Marriage” by Kahil Gibran, and our close friends read the more light-hearted “A Lovely Love Story” by Edward Monkton. We had the very talented Button Boys playing the guitar in the background. We said our vows under a fabulous floral arch that was dotted with tree stumps and strewn petals.

With the guys all wearing their own mismatched kilts we stuck with grey tweed jackets and bowties. Andy went for a pale green tweed and bowtie combo with his family tartan. Originally I wanted the girls in mismatched dresses, however, a month before the wedding i had second thoughts and sent them all back! We ended up with 3 of them wearing a pale lychee dress and the other 2 in pale grey, to tie everyone together.

We gave all our guests a welcome cocktail on arrival before the ceremony, blackberry, and elder flower pimms (very British!). For our escort cards we gave everyone gold glitter dipped animals with a dymo name tag round their neck; they were not intentionally meant to be favors, however, most of the guests took them home as a keepsake.

We wanted to keep it super relaxed, and an informal party vibe later in the day. Good food, flowing drinks and music were our top priorities. The house itself was very formal inside, however, we wanted to keep the ceremony more on the whimsical side, and the decor understated with ribbons, lots of wild blooms and gold dipped feathers hanging across the length of the marquee.

After the ceremony I took off my veil and added a floral crown. I had bought another dress from the high street store, Phase 8, as I wanted something that would let me dance the night away without restricting me with corseting when the party got started. We had a traditional Scottish Ceilidh so it was super important that I could be swung around!
