This California Bride Had Her Mother’s Gown Altered Into a Crop Top Wedding Dress

April 24, 2016 | editorial team

Tracy had her mother’s wedding dress altered to create the perfect crop top wedding dress. The dress, which was bought 45 years ago, inspired the vintage vibe for Tracy and Andrew’s wedding. Sticking with a fall color palette, the couple incorporated darker jewel tones into the bridesmaids dresses, floral arrangements, and colored wine goblets used to decorative the tables at the reception. Julianne Brasher Photography captured the couple saying “I do” and then dancing the night away with family and friends at the Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, California.

My mother told me that her dress, which I wore after carrying out my own alterations, was called a “pineapple” color when she bought it 45 years ago. This dress inspired me to have a vintage inspired vibe and in my mind that meant a variety of darker jewel tone colors. With a November wedding, the darker colors were also fitting. We used this as as inspiration for my four sister’s dresses, the flowers, and the colored wine goblets.

It was such a special process for us to plan the ceremony. We had framed photos near the top of the aisle of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days. Andrew’s mother, an artist, drew a beautiful tree for guests to sign as they took their seat. Andrew’s uncle/godfather/oldest living Smythe was our officiant.

We picked our favorite quotes and song lyrics for close friends to read. My nieces and nephews wrote down words of advice for marriage for us and our officiant read them aloud (their input a surprise to us that day). It was also important to me to have our marriage certificate signed during the ceremony. We read our own vows followed by guided more traditional vows and we sealed it with a kiss, of course.

How can I pick a most memorable part!? Besides the whole ceremony in general I loved “sneaking off” with my husband immediately after the ceremony, on a high, to have some time alone to digest the enormity that we just got married!

Julianne was a very sweet surprise in that she blew us all away as a photographer. She was present without being overbearing. We were stunned at how quickly she got “the shot”. We have so many beautiful photos from her, the current struggle is selecting ones to put in an album. We’ll be forever grateful.
