A: Why not? It's the perfect time to give a big thank you to your friends, your family, and your bride. Spend some time creating a special toast for your wife (Yep, that's who she'll be by toast time!) Find the perfect quote, song lyric, or your own heart felt words and gather everyone together in raising their glass to her. Wax eloquent by reciting a sonnet from Shakespeare or Browning, or keep it short and sweet with something lovely and to the point. Here is one of our favorite sayings, “To my beautiful wife and best friend, who knows me better than anyone else and loves me all the same.”
Q: I'm a little worried about the first dance...
A: Don't think about it, just sign up for a few lessons dance lessions and surprise your girl with your forethought. Be it ballroom, swing, line, or tango, the classes will be fun for you both, and all your friends will be uber-impressed as you strut your stuff at the wedding. Plus, it’s a great way to spend quality time together in the busy months leading up to your big day.
Q: What do I do when it comes time to cut the cake and toss the garter?
A: Even though all eyes will be on you, both events are actually simple and if you just use common sense you’re sure to pull them off successfully!
When it comes time to cut the cake, stand next to or slightly behind your bride and put your hands on the knife together. Slice off one piece of cake from the bottom layer. And place it on a plate. Give each other one bite using a fork or even your fingers, and then kiss to seal the sweet deal. We do not recommend smashing the cake into each other’s mouth, it’s messy and not very romantic!
The garter toss can be fun and silly, but don’t get raunchier than your bride will be comfortable with. Pay attention to the fact that she may be wearing two garters, one (usually higher up) for keeping, and one (lower down) for tossing. Try not to grab the wrong one! Although garters feel stretchy, they may not travel all that far once you sling them into the air, so don’t stand too far away from your guys. If tossing the garter just isn’t your thing, or if you don’t have many single guys to catch it, there’s no rule that says you have to this ritual. Save the garter as an heirloom instead and find other ways to celebrate.
Q: I’ve heard that the reception really flies by, how do I keep from being overwhelmed by all that’s going on?
A: It’s true that most couples can’t believe how quickly their wedding day went by, and with so much excitement and celebration, it’s no wonder. The key to making the most of your day is to take special care of yourself and your fiancée and to slowdown and enjoy the moment whenever possible. Be sure you are both eating enough food and drinking enough water so you feel energized all day and all night long. Remember, you'll want energy left over when you arrive at your honeymoon suite! Stay connected with each other during the events of the day by finding little moments to sneak away together. Start the day with a heartfelt handwritten love note expressing how you feel, and stick close together during the hustle and bustle of your reception. Don’t waste your energy on little hiccups that occur in the planning. No matter what, you’re getting married today and the details simply pale in comparison.
Sail through your wedding reception with style, from your entrance to your exit.
