Immediately drawn to Philadelphia-based wedding photographer Alison Conklin's vibrant, true-to-life style, Laura and Andrew were more than thrilled to get to experience her artistry first-hand on their wedding day. With their soft, spring-inspired color palette, the industrial modern aesthetic of Bubby's Brooklyn, and the picturesque New York City skyline as a backdrop, Laura and Andrew's wedding was a gorgeous blend of crisp urban style and warm natural elements!
The Newlyweds: Laura and Andrew
Junebug: What were your most important goals in planning your wedding?
Laura and Andrew: To ensure that everyone in attendance knew how important their presence was. We tried to make sure that it would be as stress-free, comfortable, well-organized, and fun as possible.
Junebug: How would you describe your personal wedding style?
Laura and Andrew: Spring-like. At times we worried about hitting guests over the head with pinks and greens, but it came together as a cohesive theme that we were really happy with.
Junebug: Where did you hold your wedding and reception, and why?
Laura and Andrew: We picked Bubby's Brooklyn based on several recommendations from other couples who were impressed with the level of service, which we found to be right on. The whole operation ran like a well-oiled machine. The space itself was also just beautiful and offered great flow for the different components of the wedding (e.g., the ceremony space was disassembled and became the dance floor when everyone was on the mezzanine for cocktail hour). Also, the views are spectacular - by day, you can see boats and families in the park and on the nearby carousel while at night the skyline, especially the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, are enchanting. There were also great places to take photos nearby, and it was in walking distance (or a short drive in a school bus).
Junebug: What three adjectives describe your wedding best?
Laura and Andrew: Colorful, warm, and personal.
Junebug: Is there anything else you would like to share with us about your wedding, your love story or your lives?
Laura and Andrew: We knew the party would be fun, but we were both so moved by the ceremony. It was the last part of the wedding that we planned, but it was worth every hour of planning. It was especially meaningful to have our families standing with us, and six aunts giving readings.
Junebug: What were you looking for in a photographer?
Laura and Andrew: The ability to capture the elements that make the event so meaningful in person but are often lost in formal wedding photos, like candid facial expressions and movement in dancing. Alison's website showed not only that ability, but also so much color and artistry.
Junebug: What specifically drew you to Alison Conklin and her imagery?
Laura and Andrew: The candids!
Junebug: What did you enjoy most about working with Alison?
Laura and Andrew: Other than her beautiful images, she was such a calming and warm presence. She was so unobtrusive but at the same time knew how to calmly recommend a certain shot. We had not planned when we would first see one another - although we knew it would be before the ceremony for photos - and Alison recommended we see one another alone, which was one of the most special parts of the day.
The Photographers: Alison and Geoff Conklin of Alison Conklin Photography
Junebug: How did you approach this particular wedding and what did you most want to capture during shooting?
Alison: With each wedding that Geoff and I shoot together we try to work off of the couples personalities so that we can truly tell the story of their day.
Junebug: Were there any special photographic requests from the couple that made this wedding especially exciting creatively or personally?
Alison: They requested a lot of candids and set aside an hour for portraits.
Junebug: What was the most fun part of this wedding for you to photograph?
Alison: The carousel and the views from the DUMBO area. We also loved all of their thoughtful handmade details - the table runners were a perfect springy touch to the space. And I loved her polka dot wedding dress!
Junebug: How did the locations available to you affect the type of images you shot and how you shot them?
Alison: With Laura and Andrew's color palette for the wedding, and such beautiful details, I think that we were able to create some fun and whimsical images. We used the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge a few times as the backdrop to the images - as well as the cobblestone streets and the bright, fun carousel.
Junebug: Were there any special locations you were able to choose that made for really great images?
Alison: Taking the couple outside at night was fantastic. Both bridges were lit perfectly and it was great to grab some fun images of them. It was really cold that evening so even though we were outside for less than 5 minutes it created some of our favorite images from the wedding.
Junebug: What kind of equipment did you use while shooting this wedding?
Alison: Geoff and I both shoot all Canon gear. I use the Canon Mark II and Geoff uses the Mark III
